"The P-51 Mustang—perhaps the finest piston engine fighter ever built—was designed and put into flight in just a few months. Specifications were finalized on March 15, 1940; the airfoil prototype was complete on September 9; and the aircraft made its maiden flight on October 26. Now that is a lean development process!" —Allen Ward and Durward Sobek, commenting on the development of the P-51 Mustang and its exemplary use of trade-off curves. Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award recipient, 2008. Despite attempts to interpret and apply lean product development techniques, companies still struggle with design quality problems, long lead times, and high development costs. In a truly groundbreaking first edition of Lean Product and Process Development, Ward delivered -- with passion and penetrating insights that cannot be found elsewhere -- a comprehensive view of lean principles for developing Review: Outstanding book on lean product development - My first lean book so I cant compare with others. But I find this book very very good and different from the usual consultant books where most of ideas are on the back cover. Here it is packed with great ideas and concepts. And still very fluid to read. On top of that the physical quality of the book is outstanding. I would highly recommend it. Review: The book provides the must-read foundation of Lean Product Development - This book (especially the second edition) provides a comprehensive and actionable overview of Lean Product Development. The provided theory with simple illustrations can be applied directly. Especially the focus on fundamentally understanding how the product works, and on management that really understands both the development process and the products, are inspiring.

This is a dangerous book
Do not buy this book unless you are willing to speed up your development processes, save thousands of dollars, improve your product, and in general, it will flip your thinking. (sounds like a commercial?) -- Seriously, the cost of the book is cheap considering the amount of $ "waste" I've found in my company -- the danger lies in lean thinking and that people are afraid to change, stuck in the rut of waterfall / V processes. How much does it cost to initiate a change request (for a feature that wasn't quite developed like you wanted)? Meetings, status reports, follow up, retest....What if it could have been done right from the very beginning? I highly recommend it..

Not much changes in the new version
Although not much additional added to this version it is still very challenging to the application of lean methods to design.

Good practical advice
Interesting complement to the Lean Startup principles. Examples in the chapter are not very diverse, cases at the end are necessary.
