How easily do these smear?

The red shades, mainly from pure red to orange are on the difficult side to smear. The pure red is unusable in my opinion. Purple hues are decent because they have some blue which is a lot softer.Everything else is very good for the price in my opinion, and the sharp edges allow you to have clean edges as well as the ability to smear.

Never thought of pastels as a vegetable, fruit or otherwise. They are a chalk type base is all I know. It's certainly not something I would eat.

Will they work on doll face-ups?

I've read many reviews saying yes to that. With a little water and paint brush, swabbed over a patch of pastel on paper, then apply to the dolls face.
