Handmade by members of the youth jobs training program at a Uganda orphanage, this unique satchel is made from bark cloth, one of tropical Africa's first fabrics. Bark cloth derives from fig trees (mutaba), which are stripped once each year after which the bark regrows (the ultimate renewable resource). After the bark is stripped from the trees, it is beaten with various wooden mallets to give it an even color and a soft and fine texture. For more than 600 years, bark cloth making has been an important aspect of Ugandan culture.
