Originals

A posthumous release of Prince's own recordings of tracks which were recorded and released by other artists. These are tracks have been pulled from the infamous Vault, and it seems none of them were intended for release so they are given to us with various degrees of polish: this gives little gems of insight to the creative process and perhaps even the relationship between Prince and the other artists if you compare these with the versions which were released in the day. I have really enjoyed this album and am very happy that the estate has chosen to put it out. I can't see it getting old with me - it's up there among my favourites for sure. This content is from the early 80s and I hear that the Vault is being archived chronologically, so hope there is more of this sort of thing to come from later on in Prince's life too. I bought the CD version and enjoyed the artwork supplied. I would have liked to have had a bit more info in the liner notes and maybe even a good old-fashioned lyrics sheet.

Originals is the best collection yet from the Legendary Paisley Park Vault, the Prince magic was in full force in the 80's to mid 90's which is where these originate from & they are a joy to listen to, highlights for me are: Wouldn't You Love to Love Me?. Amazing that Prince was so prolific he was able to give away great songs to other artists with having plenty for his own albums! He always recorded the originals himself with his own vocals, and this selection of some of them is a great collection for any fan, there are some obscure ones to discover as well as more well known songs. Looking forward to hearing the rest of them someday!

....Firstly lets get the bad out of the way and the reason this cd got '4' stars and not '5' (Sorry Prince!) Theses crappy flimsy 'cardboard' Digi-Pak Cd cases are terrible and cheap, please bring back good old skool plastic jewel cases. Now on too the music itself..... 1. Sex Shooter - As a Prince purist I was never really a fan of Vanity 6 version.......and still not keen on it!, hes done far better sexy songs like Erotic City, Dirty Mind, Sexy M.F....etc...sorry again Prince! 2. Jungle Love - Always loved The Times version and Princes version is FUN-KAY!...."Where's your guts You want to make love or what?!....' 3. Manic Monday - A well loved tune (Thank You Bangles) This song famously came too Prince in a dream, he recorded this vocal whilst being extremley overly tired, so it sounded like he had just got up for work on a 'monday' morning like all us regular folks,...how is that artistry?....Classic! 4. Noon Rendezvous - More bare-bones than Shelia Es version, with just a drum and piano in background, but has a lovely vocal....still prefer Shelias version tho, but this is very nice.... 5. Make-Up - Never been a fan of this song, and still am not.....Sorry Prince..... 6. 100 MPH - Its ok..... 7. Your My Love - The Song was sh*te when Kenny Rodgers did it and it still is now, although this is most probably the deepest vocal Prince ever did?....so its worth a listen just for that! 8. Holly Rock - Its ok...now on too the good stuff!.... 9. Baby, You're a Trip - Probably my favourite song on the record, Princes vocal is amazing! and that Gospel testimony like ending!!..wow pure soul!!....this truly is a trip!....Masterpiece! 10. The Glamarous Life - Great song and great Version....love the Sax!!....Classic! 11. Gigolos Get Lonely Too - Epic bedroom sleaze that Prince does best...well better than the Morris Day version...."I guess you've heard of my reputation, I've had my share of foolin' around,....But everybody needs stimulation, and mine just happens to be,...all over town...' Classic! 12. Love Thy Will Be Done - It's always been a firm fan favourite and It's so great to have it such excellent quality after having it on bootlegg for years that sounded crap, This tune is the most beautiful prayer and just wait till you hear those cascading vocals near the end,....Jay Z actually requested that this song be on the album..so for that I salute you sir!! :) ...Masterpiece!! 13. Dear Michaelangelo - "Every summer in the gardens of Florence, A peasant of female persuasion, Used 2 cry 4 Michaelangelo, 2 save her from death's invitation....' , you cant beat Prince when he goes all Mystical and Psychedelic on us!, I much prefer this version over Shelia E's....listen to that wailing guitar!....Masterpiece! 14. Wouldn't You Love to Love Me? - Its a great track, but the audio is terrible...wish they picked another song if im honest as it kinda ruins the album for me..... 15. Nothing Compares 2 U - Nothing needs to be said about this song, But I prefer Princes 'Live' version with Rosie Gaines over this one.....that has always been my 'go too' version.....

This is raw Prince. A showcase of songs he wrote and gave to other artists. "gigilos get lonely too" stands out along with "manic Monday" and "love... Thy will be done". A must for any Prince fan. Great quality and a truly missed genius at his rawest. Buy it!

Very well thought out collection of recordings from the late artist's legendary Vault. While some of the songs should be familiar to non-fans what makes this collection is the lesser known songs such as the song he gave to Kenny Rogers which is one of the most pleasant surprises on the album. A must listen for true fans and casual fans alike!

This cd is a must for Prince fans! Shows just how diverse this talented genius was! Amazing 'original' tracks and many will make you want to dance!!! Superb!

His versions where way better than the artists that covered rpthem, he is very missed .

There is Prince, and then there is everybody else. He was both a brilliant songwriter and musician. The songs on this CD are songs that Prince wrote then other artists performed. Now we can hear Prince perform these songs he wrote. I already liked most of the songs on this CD as performed by the other artists. I actually like the Prince renditions of these songs better in most instances. It's a tremendous CD with a good variety of types of songs. It feels like getting a great brand new Prince album back in the 80s. Since getting this CD on release day I have pretty much listened to it several times of day. This CD makes me miss Prince more than ever, while at the same time continue to appreciate his incredible talent.

Das erste vom Prince-Estate veröffentlichte Album, dass mir durchgehend gut gefällt. Bei den Songs handelt es sich um Prince-Kompositionen aus den Jahren 1981 bis 1990, die von anderen Künstlern z.T. sehr erfolgreich interpretiert wurden, die Prince zu Lebzeiten aber nie selbst unter seinem Namen veröffentlicht hatte. Bei diesen Künstlern handelt es sich vorrangig um Mitglieder seines Hofstaates: Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Mazarati, Sheila E., Jill Jones, The Time, The Family sowie Taja Sevelle und letztendlich auch Martika, deren Alben i.d.R. von Prince komponiert, eingespielt und produziert wurden. Mit The Bangles (Manic Monday) und Kenny Rogers (You're my love) wurden zwei Außenseiter jenseits des purpurnen Hofstaates mit Prince-Songs bedacht. Hier sind nun also deren Originale zu hören, wie sie von Prince ursprünglich gedacht und selbst eingesungen wurden. Dabei klingen die meisten Songs den bekannten Versionen sehr ähnlich, nur eben mit Princes Stimme. Und überrascht mehr als nur einmal ! Die originalen Songs im Einzelnen: -------------------------------------------------- Sex Shooter ...war als Erstveröffentlichung von Apollonia 6 Teil des Purple Rain Soundtracks. Prince singt den größten Teil mit seiner bekannten Falsettstimme, die Musik ist (nahezu) identisch. Ich find' die Filmversion erotischer ;-) Das gilt auch für den Gesang, der bei Prince etwas lustlos rüberkommt. Jungle Love, ...der Klassiker von The Time, der ebenfalls aus dem Purple Rain Film bekannt ist. Er klingt hier wie die Erstveröffentlichung (inkl. dem Affengekreische am Anfang), nur das Prince anstatt Morris Day die Lead-Vocals singt – und The Time (Morris Day, Jesse Johnson) sowie Jill Jones die Background Vocals. Manic Monday ...wurde ursprünglich 1984 für Apollonia 6 geschrieben, dann aber 1985 The Bangles angeboten, die damit ihren Durchbruch hatten. Das Arrangement sowie Prince' Gesang klingen hier überraschend konservativ und brav. Jill Jones und Brenda Bennett (eine der drei Sängerinnen von Apollonia 6 und zudem Ehefrau von Princes damaligem Beleuchter Leroy Bennett) singen die Background Vocals. Noon Rendezvous ...ist als Kooperation mit Sheila E. entstanden und als Erstveröffentlichung auf ihrem Debüt-Album „The Glamorous Life“ zu finden. Während Sheila E. daraus eine eher perkussive Ballade gemacht hatte, wird es von Prince am Klavier im Falsett und mit reichlich Hall gesungen. Make-Up ...wurde 1981 für Vanity 6 (Vorgängerin von Apollonia 6) geschrieben und ist der einzige Song, der mir bislang nicht bekannt war. Insofern kann ich keinen Vergleich zu der bekannten Version aus dem Jahr 1982 ziehen. Der hauptsächlich von einer synthetischen Bassline getragene Song und Princes seltsam monotoner, mechanischer Gesang erinnern mich sehr an Kraftwerks „Autobahn“ (1974). 100 MPH Wer Princes Hit „Kiss“ kennt, kennt auch Mazarati. Eine der vielen Pseudo-Bands, die seinerzeit zu Princes Hofstaat im Paisley Park gehörten und die von Prince oder einem seiner Musiker (hier der The Revolution Bassist Brown Mark) gefördert wurden. Mazarati singt die Background-Vocals zu „Kiss“ und bekam von Prince dafür den Song „100 Mph“. Prince selbst hatte es bereits zwei Jahre früher aufgenommen und ist hier mit Jill Jones als Backgroundsängerin zu hören. Mich erinnert der Groove sehr an das ebenfalls von Prince geschriebene „The sex of it“ von Kid Creole & The Coconuts. You're my love Oh mein Gott! Die für mich größte Überraschung auf diesem Album. Kenny Rogers hat es zwar komplett neu eingespielt, sich bei seiner Version aber offenbar weitestgehend an Princes Original gehalten (Prince singt zum Ende etwas leidenschaftlicher). Mich erinnert es in seiner Kitschigkeit an Princes „Baby“ von 1979, nur mit sonorer Neil Diamond Stimme gesungen. Holly Rock … wurde von Sheila E. in dem Film „Krush Groove“ (1985) performt und auch als mäßig erfolgreiche Single veröffentlicht. Er ist auch in der von Prince gesungenen Version („...my name is Sheila E...“) eine Gemeinschaftsproduktion von Prince und Sheila E., die Percussion spielt und Background Vocals singt. Baby, you're a trip ...wurde zwar erst 1987 von Jill Jones auf ihrem ersten Soloalbum gleichen Namens veröffentlicht, aber sie hatte bereits auf dieser Originalversion von 1982 die Background Vocals für Prince (und ihn damit fast an die Wand) gesungen. Hier ist deutlich zu hören, warum Prince ihr das Debütalbum auf den Leib geschneidert hatte. Und das zu Recht. The Glamorous Life ...ist hier in der von Prince im Dezember 1983 eingesungenen Version zu hören – ohne die Percussion von Sheila E. Nur zwei Monate später (Februar 1984) hatte Sheila E. den Song neu aufgenommen und mit ihrer Percussion und Stimme bereichert. Nur 3 Monate später (Mai 1984) wurde es ihr erster großer Hit. Gigolos get lonely too ...ist eine Ballade aus dem zweiten The Time Album „What time is it?“ von 1982, die die zarte Seite des klischeeträchtigen Vorzeige-Chauvinisten Morris Day zeigt. Der sitzt auch hier am Schlagzeug und singt zusammen mit Jesse Johnson die Background Vocals. Ich muss gestehen, die Morris Day gesungene Version finde ich ergreifender, auch wenn Princes Falsett souliger klingt. Love… Thy will be done ...klingt fast genauso wie bei Martika, nur mit der entrückten Falsettstimme von Prince aus allen Ecken des Lautsprechers. Bei beiden kommt das Gospelfeeling, das dem Song zugrunde liegt, sehr gut rüber. Dear Michaelangelo ...ist eine weitere Kooperation mit Sheila, die auf ihrem zweiten Album „Romance 1600“ veröffentlicht wurde. Auch hier singt Sheila E. die Background Vocals und spielt Percussion. Die Stimmung der Originalversion ist etwas düsterer und rauer. Wouldn't you love to love me ...wurde von Prince ursprünglich 1976 geschrieben und ist hier mit reichlich Hall in der Version von 1982 zu hören. Nachdem Prince den Counterpart in Michael Jacksons Song (und Video) BAD abgelehnt hatte, lehnte wiederum Michael Jackson Princes Angebot ab, „Wouldn't you love to love me“ auf BAD aufzunehmen. (In Kenntnis dieser Originalversion kann ich das sogar verstehen.) So wurde es dann von Taja Sevelle erstmals 1987 offiziell veröffentlicht und ist definitiv besser, als diese Originalversion. Das Beste zum Schluss: Nothing compares 2 U ...ist hier als 15. und letzte Originalversion zu hören. Prince hatte bereits 1993 eine Live-Version (mit Rosie Gaines) veröffentlicht. Eine Studioversion schien aber nicht zu existieren. Princes Originalversion ist nicht nur beeindruckender gesungen als die Erstveröffentlichung von The Family aus dem Jahre 1985 und sogar als die berühmtere Coverversion von Sinead O'Connor von1990. Sie ist hier als Rock Ballade komplett anders (und besser) arrangiert, als die bislang bekannten Versionen. Susannah Melvoin (Background Vocals) und Eric Leeds (Saxophon) von The Family sind auch hier dabei. Fazit: --------- Dem ein oder anderen werden mit Sicherheit der persönliche Favorit auf dieser Zusammenstellung fehlen. Ich finde dieses Album insofern beeindruckend, als das es zeigt, wer tatsächlich der Kopf hinter all den Hits ist. Prince hatte bereits bei diesen Originalaufnahmen (Demos ?) alles bis ins Detail im Kopf und auf Tonband gebannt. Er hat seinem Hofstaat jedes Stöhnen, jedes Ah und Oh, jeden Witz in den Songs vorgegeben. Die Interpreten haben es tatsächlich „nur“ 1 zu 1 interpretiert. Manchmal waren Sie besser und erfolgreicher als der Meister selbst - aber eben nur manchmal ;-) Für Prince-Fans ein absolutes Muss. Für Leute, die die Vielfältigkeit und den Einfluss von Prince auf die Musik der 80er näher kennenlernen wollen, eine klare Empfehlung!

Cet album nous permet de découvrir en 15 morceaux des titres que Prince a offerts à d'autres artistes (Manic Monday par les Bangles...) ou qui ont été repris par d'autres (Nothing compares 2 U, devenu un tube par Sinead O' Connor). Ces versions sont simplement fantastiques et démontrent qu'on n'est jamais si bien servi que par soi-même. Il reste encore des tas d'enregistrements fabuleux dans les archives de ce grand artiste qu'était Prince, au hasard l'aftershow à la Cigale en 2009, époustouflant !
