Great product - found lost wedding ring within 5 minutes of trying out the ACE 300. No real learning curve at all- when I get some time, I’ll read the instruction manual and get more in-depth, to start my budding detectorist career! Very easy to use and I can see this can be very fun and rewarding to use.

Wow!! Works so much better than anticipated and user friendly!! Have had many other brands and models and this doesn’t even compare! Buy it and start exploring!!

The Ergonomics The ergonomics of the design are very good as long as you are 5’ 6” or taller. At a height of 5’ 6”, I adjust the stem as short as it will go. The control panel is very well arranged. The buttons are very easily pressed with the thumb of the hand holding the unit. The handle is at an angle that requires you to bend your wrist too much if you grip it with your fist, but you can grip it with your fingers extended somewhat, allowing your wrist to be nearly straight and comfortable. Because my forefinger was falling above the foam grip, I maneuvered the foam high enough that it compressed into the control unit. I could not figure out the purpose of the arm strap – I removed it. Coil Angle Adjustment The arrangement for adjusting the coil to shank angle does not provide enough friction to prevent the weight of the coil from tilting the front of the coil down as evidenced by others who have broken the plastic bolt that adjusts the friction. To solve the problem, I made a washer with three holes for the pegs like the rubber one, from a 0.016”” thick clear plastic yogurt container cover, and placed it behind one of the rubber washers. This solved the problem, but it is best to place one of the washers behind each of the two rubber washers. The added washer must be thin enough to allow the rubber washer to recess significantly into the cavity, and the stem with washers must slide easily into the coil ears. The Battery Cover. The battery cover of the control unit bumps into the shank cam lock as you attempt to slide it off. You can solve this problem by filing off about 1/16” off the pointy end of the battery cover. The AA Battery Advantage A significant advantage of the Garrett metal detector design is that it uses four AA batteries instead of the two 9-volt batteries that many competitors use. The four AA batteries have an energy capacity that is about 64% greater than that of two 9-volt batteries. Furthermore, two 9-volt batteries typically cost 2.5 times the cost of the four AA cells. Loudness It is extremely loud, especially in the pinpointing mode. The headphones solve the loudness problem, but it is awkward dealing with the cable mess if you need to lay down the detector from time to time. The Cable I added a mic stand cable clip to the stem to help in dressing the cable. I wanted the cable dressed close to the stem, but not so tight as to stress the strain relief at the coil. Use I located a “tungsten” ring with a target ID of 75. Tungsten has a relative conductivity of 30, and I expected a number smaller than 75 for the target ID. The ring was between two very close iron indications and a little difficult to capture. Iron masking might have been useful had I known the target ID would be 75.

Very good unit and found a few treasures already with it

I needed to find a property marker. I tried to dig for it with no luck - and I knew within a few feet where it was! I used this Garrett detector and I found it in five minutes!!! This detector has a pinpoint function which shows a location strength bar and I could see it get higher and lower in a 10 inch left to right sweep and 10 inch up and down sweep. I pinpointed the marker and dug down 2 inches deeper and found it immediately. Paid for itself in its first outing. I also found my dirt in the northeast has lots of minerals that sets off the detector on any setting over 2 bars. I ordered the super sniper coil which should work better in my soil when looking for small items like coins.

I have a sawmill and I have recently been getting a lot of tree service logs which come from peoples yards, so there is no end to the types of metals grown inside of these trees. My new Garrett ACE 400 is amazing it can detect metal over 8 inches and it tells me exactly how deep the metal is. I'm sorry I waited so long to purchase and my grandson can't wait to use it for gold hunting.
