A very beautiful ink
Beautiful ink. Very ‘thin’ and flowing, and a gorgeous dark, rich colour. Works fabulously with my dip pen, and doesn’t give me unexpected ‘blotches’. I previously used W&N drawing ink, which is also quite lovely, but phmartin’s is the best ink I’ve ever tried.

Lovely colour
I had not used this product before it was recommended for an online course I’m doing. I have found it to be worth buying again.

Works well from dip pens, not sure if it’s really ‘sepia’
The colour confusion is not the ink or company’s fault, and I have to preface this by saying that I’m no longer sure what colour ‘sepia’ is meant to refer to — I always thought it was the old-style warm brown/black but I think I’ve since learned I was looking for walnut ink. This is a kind of greenish-brown black and goes grey when used in a wash. I used it in the horse drawing with a Maru nib and two brushes and you can get lively gradations if tone if your patient with it. Dr. Martin’s Bombay India ink is great in general though, I have the colour set #1 and use the black often. You have to be aware that it acts like (and likely is) an acrylic ink, so if it dries up too much in a well it won’t act consistently off a dip pen as it gets thicker by the hour. I decant a small amount into a bottle I can recap easily (having the dropper is great for this) and If I leave it open for too long I just drop in a literal drop of distilled water and mix it up. It’s very waterproof — I often go over areas if hatching or stipple with build ups of light washes and as long as the previous layer is dry, this just layers predictably and your previous marks don’t lift at all. I’d happily watercolour over it if it had a day to dry. The colour thing is my own fault — this is quite a nice hue though and does have a sort of vintage aesthetic if that’s what you’re after.

Lovely colour, but dries ridiculously fast in a fountain pen
Another review gives an indication of the colour - if you're expecting the classic sepia brown, be aware this is more of a warm grey colour. Rather lovely, and a nice shade for line and wash art; give a lovely definition to your art without being quite so aggressively bold as a black ink. It stands up well to water, too, staying clear even after multiple passes of watercolour wash. So overall a lovely ink, but sadly really not good for the fountain pens I bought it to use with. It dries as quickly in the pen as it does on the paper, meaning even during one sitting you can find your pen suddenly no longer working, and the ink flow quickly diminished to make it quite horrible to sketch with. Edit: Downgrading from three to two stars because it does specifically say "non clogging" on the label and... it isn't.

This is good quality ink however it is not the colour I was wanting. This ink is more black - not the brown I needed.
